Hierarchy
of Values
HierarchyOfValues.org is a dedicated effort to determine values that are
as absolute as possible. This is not a place where politics, religion,
or secularism is to be promoted, or challenged. This is a place to
suggest values that can be described in a single sentence or phrase; that's
it. There are other venues to express political, secular, and religious
ideas.
The first four values have been determined. If you would like to
propose a value that you believe should be among the first four, please
submit it below, and include a reason why you believe it is deserving of
that ranking. Feel free and welcome to challenge the first four,
and/or suggest a fifth, sixth...
I have determined that 'Freedom of Speech' is the single most important
value of humankind. I am referring to unfettered freedom of speech; speech
without limit or constraint of any kind. Assault (The threat of
bodily harm, or call for others to cause bodily harm to an individual or
group.), liable, and a call for the destruction of the property of
individuals or groups are covered by laws where freedom of speech is complete
or limited.
People will hate. People with love. Unfettered freedom of speech
includes the freedom to express love and hate, anger and desire, disgust
and admiration no matter what another individual or group of individuals
might believe. Free individuals will promote ridiculous and idiotic
ideas, and beliefs as well as brilliant ideas and beliefs. When ideas
and beliefs are freely expressed, they will be freely challenged and defended,
and the truth or idiocy of these ideas and beliefs will emerge. |

“Freedom of speech is a principal
pillar of a free government: When this support is taken away, the constitution
of a free society is dissolved, and tyranny is erected on its ruins.”
— Benjamin Franklin

"To suppress free speech is a double wrong. It violates the rights of
the hearer as well as those of the speaker."
— Frederick Douglass

“My own opinion is enough for me, and I claim the right to have it
defended against any consensus, any majority, anywhere, any place, any
time. And anyone who disagrees with this can pick a number, get in
line, and kiss my ass.”
― Christopher Hitchens

“Restriction of free thought and free speech is the most dangerous
of all subversions.
― William O. Douglas |

“If there is any principle of
the Constitution that more imperatively calls for attachment than any other
it is the principle of free thought — not free thought for those who
agree with us but freedom for the thought that we hate.”
— Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.

"...the peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is that
it is robbing the human race… If the opinion is right, they are deprived
of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth; if wrong, they lose,
what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier
impression of truth produced by its collision with error."
— John Stuart Mill

“Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing
the freeness of speech.”
― Benjamin Franklin as Silence Dogood |
